A Little Pumpkin Patch Magic at Wintonbury! 🍂🎃
Fall fun arrived at Wintonbury Early Childhood Magnet School (WECMS) last week! Thanks to our amazing PTO, approximately 340 pumpkins were delivered from Pickin’ Patch in Avon, transforming our courtyard into a festive pumpkin patch for our youngest learners. 🍁
Students had the opportunity to visit the patch, pick their very own pumpkin, and even bring it home or keep it in the classroom for hands-on learning!
Even more special? The owners of Pickin’ Patch are a former Wintonbury family, making this a wonderful celebration of community connection. 💛

In their journey towards literacy, all students need a literacy-rich, supportive environment where teachers provide appropriately challenging instruction and numerous opportunities for practicing newly developed skills (Snow et al., 1998; Tomlinson, 2009). Students in room 203 "read" the newest edition of the non-fiction magazine called "My Big World." The edition is about pumpkins. This is a timely non-fiction text to explore as it coincides with the recent harvest lesson at Auerfarm and our school based pumpkin patch this week (that was provided by our PTO). Students in room 203 used their background knowledge around harvest and pumpkins to better understand the text. They also practiced literacy skills such as identifying parts of the magazine (front cover, title), pointing to words, sweeping left to right while the teacher read, talking about the difference between words and pictures, using pictures to gather information, and engaged in oral language as they discussed the text with their peers. With careful modeling and prompting by the teacher, some children were able to read along with her. Prior knowledge and taught literacy skills helped students predict what word came next in the sentence and supported comprehension.

Students in room 106 play to learn during choice time (also known as centers or center time). The materials and experiences provided during this time are carefully planned for based on observations of children's interested and what standards can be emphasized. Since each child is at a different place in their development experiences tend to be open-ended, allowing for access regardless of developmental level. The best part is that the children choose what, how and where to learn by selecting what center to work at. When children choose they are afforded agency - they have power, voice and choice to direct their own learning journey instead of being a passive recipient of information. Teachers support the learning process through questions and feedback. Play is powerful!

Stronger Together: Bloomfield and East Granby Public Schools Partner to Expand School Meals!
Bloomfield Public Schools is proud to partner with East Granby Public Schools to bring expanded, full-service school meal options to students at Seymour Elementary, Allgrove, East Granby Middle School, and East Granby High School!
This innovative partnership demonstrates how neighboring school districts can work together to put students first while creating lasting benefits for both communities. By sharing expertise, resources, and ideas, the districts are expanding access to school meals, creating staffing opportunities, and exploring new ways to support local farms and businesses.
As Bloomfield Superintendent Dr. Tracy Youngberg shared, this is a student-centered, win-win partnership that benefits both districts. She also recognized Food Service Director Nick Carambelas for his leadership in making this collaboration a reality.

How do we make zoodles from zucchini? This was the essential question from an inquiry based enrichment group that met today. Instructional Coach, Jenna Tenore, led the experience for a group of preschoolers in the Wintonbury Kid's Kitchen. She guided the group of students through the process of making zoodles by asking questions, introducing and using real tools, and following directions to "read" a sequence of steps. The students participated in the full process from washing the tables, their hands and the zucchini first to taking turns using a "spiralizer" spinning the zucchini though into long curls. Finally, they cooked and tasted it! Each student had their own visual checklist to following along with, checking off the steps as they were completed. Across this whole experience children engaged in many developmental standards: counting steps, reading pictures, following a sequence, recalling an event in order, fine and gross motor work, and various speaking and listening skills. They were introduced to new tools and vocabulary such as spiralizer, zoodle, produce and organic.

Who works at our school? This is the guiding question for students in Ms. Thode's class this week. Today Principal Straker visited the class (room 105) as part of their study of the school. Children are working towards building their understanding of people in school and their roles - who is who and what exactly do they do!

Wintonbury hosted Open House & Curriculum Night with 272 attendees! During classroom visits, families learned about their child's day and how early learning standards are connected to routines, play and inquiry. The Wintonbury PTO provided light refreshments in the multipurpose room after classroom visits giving families the opportunity to network with each other or talk with select Wintonbury staff about other components of the curriculum such as Responsive Classroom, "Second Step", Augmentative and Alternative Communication tools and how Auerfarm field trips are brought back to the classroom as provocations and extensions. It was a wonderful night! Thank you to all who joined and supported us for the evening.

We kicked off the 2026–2027 school year with an energetic “Back to the ’70s” Annual Convocation at Bloomfield High School on Monday, August 24! From ’70s music and dancing to an inspiring message from 2026 Teacher of the Year Jen Coleman and a fabulous costume contest, our staff brought the energy!
The theme was more than just fun—it represents our commitment to working toward a score in the 70s on the state accountability index and, most importantly, continuing to grow and improve outcomes for our students.
Following Convocation, staff engaged in professional development to prepare for an amazing year ahead. Planting Seeds. Inspiring Growth. Cultivating Excellence.

On June 12, members of the Bloomfield High School Class of 2026 took part in the annual Senior Parade, visiting schools across the district and inspiring the next generation of Bloomfield students.
From excited cheers in the hallways to heartfelt reunions with former teachers, the day was filled with pride, memories, and celebration as seniors reflected on how far they have come before graduation on June 16.

Today, we proudly honored the dedicated staff members who make a difference in the lives of our students every day at our annual Education Celebration. We recognized milestone years of service, retirees, Teachers of the Year, and our inaugural Paraeducators of the Year and Extraordinary Service Award recipients.
Thank you to all of our honorees for your commitment, passion, and service to the Bloomfield community. Last night, Wintonbury welcome families to Math Night. One activity included a life sized board game., in which the children were the game pieces. After landing , they completed the math task indicated on the spot, such as count to 10, or make a clap/stomp pattern.
